The longer you let them grow the bigger and deeper hole you will have to dig. Trees sprouted from acorns in the same year most of the roots are still in the shell and being fed by the nutrients provided from the seed. If you did them now and pot them it is a lot easier.

Ok thanks

I noticed there are several types sold on the websites. What are the advantages/dis to the types? Stake material?

I've used rebar and old metal fence posts... I wouldn't recommend wooden stakes because of rot...

I use Tubex Tree Shelters. I have some that have been in use now for six years around sawtooth oaks. They are very durable and long lasting.

Here is a link to Foresty Suppliers where I purchased my tubes: http://www.forestry-supp...tle=Tubex+Tree+Shelters

I would not use any type of wooden stake as they will rot. I have used t-post, rebar, metal conduit and PVC pipe as stakes on my tubes.

I'm a big believer too. I like the tubex combitubes and pvc conduit stakes. Here's one that started as about a 30" seedling in early March last year. Believe it or not the photo was taken sometime in the same growing season...maybe late August. For scale thats a 4' tube pushed into the ground about an inch.

Well I ordered 100 4ft Tubex today and plan to start putting 'em on this weekend. If you already have branches do you just squeeze 'em inside the taller tube?
