1 or 100?

Hey guys, I just posted another entry to my blog and invite you to check it out. In short, it asks the question...would you rather catch 100 trout or grind it out for 1 bite from a trophy trout. I'm interested to hear your thoughts?

I will agree about winter time being big trout time. My biggest to date came in December.

Then why do most LA anglers shut it down....for decades my pops and I would go sac a lait fishing or crush the reds in dead end canals...I think most people do the same. Instead you should be fishing your big trout spots...I got one that comes to mind in Pt a la hache right off the get. If blackspotfishing see's this...he'll know what I'm talking about [biggrin]
Definitely one big one. My biggest (not very big, but I'm working on it) came in December in about 1-2 feet of water, which I thought was a little strange until I read this. Another awesome read, Chris!

I imagine to some extent for many they're just fair weather fishermen. I know that was not the case for you and your pops so not sure why you and him left the trout come winter time. Dead end canals can be some of the best winter trout fishing you will find.
That is some fine reading there SS.

It really gets a guy to thinking about things, especially what is important in life.
100 .. my largest trout ever was 6.5. Have caught a few in the 5 range. All the big ones I have caught the meat has been bloody and the fish have a strong taste. I have no desire to target trophy fish..give me 100 in the 14-16 inch range and I'm happy happy happy.
For many years I was part of a hunting club that hunted 8 point Bucks or better progressive. The second buck had to be bigger than the first. During those years there were guys who also shot Does. Those guys would kill a couple does and a small buck. It was a rare occassion when a Doe hunter killed a really nice buck. I think fishing is much the same. If you want to catch numbers, then your methods and expectations are to fill up the cooler and limitout. IMHO
100 big ones
That's right...
I guess when you grow up in the seafood industry your mindset is these waters provide. We put more emphasis on substinence than on trophy's. I had an interesting conversation with a fellow at the boat launch last year. We had just come in from the marsh with a three man limit 75. He walked up and asked if we did any good and my buddy opened up the 90qt(it was to the rim). He acted like his feelings were hurt and asked why we needed so many fish. I told him to eat. All three in my boat were natives of the area, 4-5 generations with parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents who all were in the seafood business but are too old to catch their own any more...so I explained this to the fellow and told him after we each took our 25..then cleaned and delivered a few bags of fillets..not one piece would ever get frozen and it would all be eaten and enjoyed. He then proceeded to tell me we (our families) should eat catfish because trout are too important of a resource to keep at those numbers...I guess this philosphy is becoming more an more common along this coast.

Carnivore, please don't take my blog post as a "You can only catch 1 fish and throw the rest back." On the contrary, I grew up fishing the LA Delta since I was 5 and my greatest memories are catching limits of fish before the sun hit the horizon in Mrytle Grove/Port Sulphur/Lafitte/Delacroix/Hopedale, dropping the ice chest off at the camp/truck/whatever and going to catch another limit. Our best year in our log book was close to 10,000 trout in 1 year…in short, we did some damage. However, the true intent of my post is to encourage trout anglers, who are looking for that wall hanger, to think outside the box and leave the limits alone, because very rarely do you catch a toad while catching school trout. It's the truest form of "the thrill of the hunt" because once you set your mind to it and you make it happen it's the truest form of happiness/achievement….hence the story about my dad!
10,000 trout in one year..that's more damage than some gill netters. Don't take this the wrong way but everyone has their OWN agenda. The year ya'll caught 10k trout..I bet you were totally against gill netting...right? It's different ideas of the thrill..if I want to catch something to pull hard on the line I will target redfish..and then probably throw her back. Most in my circle don't care about trophy trout..they would rather catch limits of "schoolies". If people love trophy trout fishing I'm all for it...same as trophy deer shooting. Don't keep any small trout to eat..or don't shoot any 120" deer..I have no problem with that. Just don't legislate your own wishes and desires to affect my livelyhood or my outdoor experience..thats all...[wink]

I'm not sure what you are arguing with SS for on this. His post is simply about whether on any given fishing outing, whether folks would prefer to catch 1 big trout, or a limit. He wasn't pushing any agenda for or against catch and release, or commercial fishing. Simply that catching a bunch of little ones vs. one big one is usually mutually exclusive.

Since I didn't grow up or live near saltwater trout fisheries, I don't relate to the conquest for a big speck. I get to do it a handful of times, here and there. My biggest was around 5lbs, probably just shy of it (not surprisingly it was caught while fishing with SouthernSalt) and if I fished for them all the time, I probably would have been pretty pumped by it. To people who live and fish for them as a primary fishery, the thrill of achieving a large speck in the 7lb+ range is a huge accomplishment. Growing up in Canada and fishing for walleye a good bit, I'd equate what Chris is speaking about to folks who have a main focus on walleye. Both are known taste great (I'd give walleye the edge though) and are usually the fish people choose to keep a bunch of for eating. Coincidentally they do look kind of similar and actually fight similarly (which is to say, not all that hard). Catching an 8lb+ walleye is a big accomplishment. I caught 2 in my life that were 8lbs. Once was with someone who really knew the lake we were fishing, and I was along for the ride, and the other was when I guided one summer on a northern fly in lodge. So I'm kind of spoiled that way. I wouldn't say I put in blood sweat an tears in catching them. My friend's dad on the other hand, was bonkers for walleye, and would fall into the category Chris is speaking to. Catching an 8lb walleye (he caught a few in his day) was a huge milestone. He would definitely take one 8lb walleye over catching several dozen in a day. I on the other hand don't get opportunities all that often to fish for walleye or specks, and therefore think walleye and specks taste too good to pass up on any opportunity to catch and keep as many as I can.

Not arguing at all...but every conversation I have ever been part of about trophy trout..creel limits are always to blame. I think we have good numbers in ms and la right now and think the size and creels should stay the same. Well actually I would like to see only 2 over 22"..but I won't legislate that. Maybe we are on the same page with this.........
This was a post of either or and in no way attacked anyone's choice to do either. No where in the original thread or any post salt has made in this thread has attacked anyone's right to choose trophy over limits. The thread simply asks which one would you choose and why he chooses the way he does now.
I'd take the 100 every time. I can't eat fried thrills, grilled happiness or smoked achievement.

Sounds like you fit the old adage that the way to your heart is through your stomach.[laugh]
