7-23 os

Got off nights this morning and headed down to the beach to see if the shrimp were coming in any thicker. First throw had about 30 in it so I put them in the aerator and decided to see if anything was hanging around to eat them. About 630 the water came alive with trout busting shrimp all over the place. I stayed for 3 hours catching or missing one on every cast with live shrimp. Mainly specs with a few whites mixed in. Lost count of how many. I would say close to 100. Out of all that had 3 that were keeper size. Every time the bucket would get empty it would only take 1 cast to load the bucket back up. Saw several big black drum cruising by but did not wAnt to fight them on 8lb test.

That sounds like a fun morning. East or west side of MS?

I think the "os" means ocean springs [tongue]

Glad you had a good time feeding the cheewees! Had to be more fun than I had at the office!

Dang I hate getting old. I truly didn't see the "os" in the subject line until I reread it just now.
Glad to hear that just wish they were bigger. Last time I waded in OS couldn't find any trout

Me either! I may try somewhere on east beach when I get a chance
O J : I missed it to and I read it 3 times.[wink]

I thought I had an amazing spot on east beach. Right as you come out of the woods by shearwater and pass over the little bridge. Thought that creek/bayou dumping would have the fish in there. Fished it on a falling tide and realized how shallow it is and doesn't have the bottom contours it appeared to on google earth. Been a bust both times I fished it. Usually go to the islands but it's so close to home the area is perfect for a quick wade. Guess I'm gonna have to try some other spots, maybe closer to the research lab.

I live off Halstead so I know exactly where you are talking about and I've fished it too with the same luck. That water is pretty nasty looking. I've never had any success fishing off east beach. I've kayaked around there up into those big grass beds offshore and around those bayous for a lack of a better term. Nothing. However I usually go in the middle of the day so might have better luck real early.

Yeah I live off of Hanley which backs up to the national seashore so I'm just a few blocks from there. When I waded I found nothing but mud, need to take my kayak across and try the marshy area on the entrance to Davis. I have only been in the evening, maybe morning would be better like you said. Just hate to waste trips when I know I could drive 10 minutes and drop my kayak in or wade to the reefs in Biloxi.
I know where you're talking about. I've heard of people doing decent around old piers in spring and fall. The whole area is a pretty long flat with a lot of structure right next to deep water, so in my mind it should hold fish. I'm going to try it when it gets cooler I believe
Two things to add, but first let me say I've never fished over there. It's on my list to do. I think the little bridge and that drain posted earlier us one one the places where the research lab catch samples with a cast net. And that long flat I've been told hold Reds. Can't confirm either but that's what I understand from those who go there.

Don't give up on that spot... Try it again at daylight or on a high, falling tide and fish towards the first old / busted up pier to the west of the bridge (done best toward the end of these pilons)

That pier caught my eye the other day
Went back to the same spot as yesterday and took my daughter. She wound up catching a few small trout and croakers. The water was a little dirtier today due to the wind. She got bored with the small fish pretty quick and wanted to get enough shrimp for me to cook for supper. Threw the net for about an hour and sorted through all the small shrimp to get a half gallon bag full of ones big enough to fry. Fish were still there I just focused on letting her catch some and baiting her hook.

About 60 yards out from there, are some oyster shells that also go a good ways east. They are south of the channel as you go further east. I don't know how muddy it is but if you can get your bait out to those shells in the morning, or at high tide you will find some trout. They may not be big, but the bayou is full of them.
I love to wade but I love catching trout more. Sounds like the kayak is going to be making the trip soon. Glad to hear some intel on that spot though. I saw that pier but never made it far that way because the mud started getting thick but I'm game.

I'll keep after it and hopefully have a good report. It's too bad we can't x ray the bottom from shore to scout spots.
