Well I want to start out by introducing myself. My name is Justin Watson and I am from Baldwyn Ms. I hunt about anything you can hunt but I have recently got a cur pup and have some questions. How do you all usually get your dogs started as far as do yall work them with squirrel tails or just take your dog to the woods and let him figure it out or a combo? I appreciate any tips and suggestions! Thanks in advance!

Well I just finished my first year with a mountain cur and I enjoyed the heck out of it.I made some good friends and memories. They are lots of opinions out there of what to do and her is my short summry of what I have learnd.First of all start out with a good proven blood line,I feel this puts you way ahead from the get go.Then socalize the pup to all kinds of people and sounds. Then do some basic obidience training so you can handle your dog. They are several methods out there.I used the Kohler method book to get me started. Then the next thing is get you a new pair of boots and wear them out in the woods and hunt the hair off your dog.I hunted with some good dogs to show mine some meat ,but once you get started good you will need to hunt your dog solo so it want get dependent on other dogs. I am no were near an expert and have a long way to go with my young dog but I have enjoyed the past year.

I have a young pup that is doing pretty good. We go to the woods several times a week and have since he was 3 months old. He treed his first squirrel 1 day shy of 18 weeks. he is 5 months old now and is doing real good. I have yet to show him a tail or dead squirrel unless he treed it. He also has never hunted with any other dogs. I think that if you start with a good blood line, all you need to do is keep them in the woods around squirrels.

This guy has it figured out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once it starts doing what you want then you can work on what you don't want it to do. Baby steps and let it be a puppy!

Many ways to showem rats; sq feeders, cage traps and if your like me, the neighborhood is overrun withem! Also, take them to woods as muchas you can. My dog lets me know any time she sees one! I think my wife has finally adjusted to it!
Seriously, if I can do it, must not be to hard. These little curs are true huntin dawgs! Have fun , be safe and take those kids huntin!
