Bluefish

I made a quick solo trip to Horn this AM to hunt some Pompano. It didn't take long to figure out that the Ladyfish and Blue Runners were gone from the shore and find out why. Large Bluefish, the biggest I have seen at the islands ever were schooled up and chasing bait. These are large 2# + fish that rip drag and put up quite a fight on light gear.
Fun stuff and they are pretty good table fare at this size.

Very cool. You're right, you don't see them too big down here. I like to filet them, cut out the blood line and smoke them. Taste like a milder spanish mack. Blues are an oily fish too. I like spanish better, but if there are only blues, I'll take a few for the smoker.
Very strong fish and can be hard on terminal tackle.
When I was stationed in Maine we would catch them as big as Bull Reds. I have a picture somewhere holding a 36in Bluefish.
They are a blast on light tackle, but a steel leader was an absolute requirement. The locals called them "chompers" up there.

And.....rough on fingers. My first trip offshore in the 70's, I got hammered by a big blue. I bled the whole trip and still have scars.
I caught a big blue last weekend. They were mixed in with Spanish working bait
Found schools of them on the deep rigs before up to 15lbs. Big enough to eat the smaller red snapper as you bring them up. I haven't found anyway to cook them where they taste good, strong metallic taste even when smoked. People from the NE rave about how good they are?
Put it on a plank and smother it with bbq sauce and grill it then throw away the fish and eat the plank.

Everything's better with some dales sauce!

You have blue fish allergies....the metallic taste is the classic symptom. Be careful how many you try to eat. The end result is a permanent "blue steel" facial expression. [smile]
