fall plot in delta ...suggestions?

1194 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Ghost
Ive got about a 3 acre block to play with in the delta. surrounded by woods crp and beans/corn are nearby. I want to spread wheat on part of it early sept partly for doves but mainly for a fall food plot and because thats cheap. Id like to plant about an acre in something that would attact deer during bowseason. Never done a plot here and not sure what deer may care for. thought i may just pick up something at bass pro to make is simple. Anyone have suggestions on something to experiment with?

We usually mix some rape in with ours. Deer on our place like it.
Just get a mix from the co-op and toss it out. If there are any hogs around, by 2x and reseed it about 40 days after your first planting because by then the hogs will have redisked it for you.
luckily dont have hogs. whats the closest coop to Indianola? preferably between Memphis and Indianola. I usually come down 61 but could go through batesville, theres one there right?
Be careful on shooting doves over a mix.

There is a Sanders in Indianola and Batesville. Either will have dang near anything you could want.
If you are only planting one plot and your willing to spend a few extra bucks try planting a seed mix with clover in it. Clover is a great Fall food source for Delta deer looking to change it up from corn or beans. Also once you plant clover, just tend to it ever so often and you wont have to re-plant it the following year. Try these:

Super Plot Plus from Wildwood Genetics
Perfect Plot from Biologic
Specialty Seed in Anguilla mixes a blend of wheat, oats, crimson and arrowleaf clovers. It's called Mississippi Blend.
Thanks for all the suggestions
Be carefule of planting too early in Mississippi. I know lots of folks who have lost much or all of their fall crops to army worms. They will take a 3 acre field out in a day and a half.

Personally I never plant before the last weekend in September in Carroll County. I always have a pretty decent food plot every year. Once it gets up pretty good I hit it with nitrogen about 150-200 lbs to the acre.

Wheat works well for me.
