Flounder Gigging Question

11138 Views 16 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  jspeer4979
A guy working at Academy in the hunting/fishing dept. told me today it is illegal to gig flounder with a gig that has more than two prongs and the gig cannot have barbs. Is this true? I've been fishing on the coast since '74 and I had never heard that. My gigs don't have barbs so i guess I'm legal, but it's by accident. I tried to look up the regulations but can't find anything.

I don't know either.I got several gigs one 1 prong, another 2 prong, and my 3 prong it is the only one that has barbs.

I always use the 2 prong barbless one,but I never knew that a barbed gig was illegal.

Are gigs legal for frogs and fish?

It is legal to gig flounder with a valid fishing license. Frogs (25 bag limit) can be gigged from April 1 - Sept.15 with a valid hunting or fishing license. You can legally throw a spear to take for buffalo, carp, gar and bowfin.
It doesn't say the first thing about barbs and I can't imagine that the FAQ wouldn't have addressed barbs at that point were there restrictions associated with the practice.

That's what I was thinking. But this guy was adament that it was illegal. Guess I'll call DMR tomorrow and pop the question to 'em
there is no limit to the number of prongs or barbs....gig away. every generator/light rigged boat out there uses some type or multi-pronged barbed gigs...it is completely legal.

The information on frogs is incorrect. The season is April 1st - September 30th.
Sounds like the season's been extended. I wouldn't be surprised if those FAQ's are several years old.
elkhunter you were told wrong. have gigged flounder all of my life and even had officers go with me. i have homemade gigs that are 5 prong.
I am going to N. Carolina in October. If they are in and legal I am gonna gig a few. That is alot of fun for sure.

Might still be some inshore but it's gonna be close they start headin out about that time
I've never gigged or caught any flounder so I really don't have a clue, but I think you summed it up best when you said, "A guy working at Academy told me." I don't put any trust in anything folks from any store tells me. If I can't read it in the handbook or in the MDWFP regulations stating it's illegal then I say it's legal. Too many of the retail store clerks are misinformed when it comes to regulations.
it is perfectly legal. i got a 5 prong that i use for frogs and it is deadly with flounder.

When I got my boat, I hadn't been boating in Mississippi waters for several years. A guy at Bass Pro in Pearl told me everyone in my boat had to have a life jacket on at all times. Now maybe he was thinking of COE lakes, but my boat is over 17' so it doesn't even apply there. He was either misinformed or was lying to make a sale. I'll let you decide. [huh]

Anything under 16 foot on the COE lakes, most everwhere I am not sure of. In the old days we never wore them in a ski boat just had to have one for each person. Sold my 15 foot boat to get a bigger one so I don't have to wear one all the time when crappie fishing.
Yeah I forgot what the exact limit was, but I was sure that my 17'6" boat was over it. Thanks Rees
Is a fishing license required to gig flounder?
