Ok, I have a problem. I have a **** that will not go in a live trap. He will go around it grab food through the side pick the cage up (i think) but will not go inside. I need this thing gone. There is a catch though i can not shoot it (or else this would have ended three weeks ago) I live in the city limits an it illegal. But dang i cant afford this **** anymore. He has tore up my porch got nasty tracks everywhere. But the worst part is he has figured out how to open the lid to my dog food an helps himself to about 3 pounds a night. An this particular dog food cost an arm an a leg I barely buy for my hunting dogs much less a ****.. Also I need some advice for bait in it that a dog will not eat. I caught the neighbors dog not thinking about it being out and the kids were devistated when they found it an came to me begging me to let them have their dog back....

One of the best **** baits is marshmallows. That might not attract a dog too much.
Put the cage trap inside a plastic garbage can laying on its side. Chock the can so it won't roll then bait with marshmallow.
He can't steal the bait and if caught he'll be out of sight of the neighbors.
I agree on the marshmallows. get you a duke dog proof foottrap, dig a hole, set the trap....I mix marshmallows, sardines, and syrup together ...and that's what I use during trapping season....its a fine bait. the dog cant get into, but the **** will. only problem is you'll have to kill the ****. just hit him with a piece of rebar or something, a good pop or two to the head should do the trick

Do a search on "**** cuff" and try per dzsmith suggestion.

Shooting the **** inside the city limits isn't anymore illegal than trapping it out of season.
If in your situation, I'd just shoot the **** with a .22 cb. Nobody will hear it and the **** will be dead. If you are going to trap it then do as Billy suggested or either stake some rebar beside the trap and wire it so the **** can't move the trap. Make a wooden box and put on 3 sides of the trap so the **** can't get to the bait without entering the door.
Alright i did the trash can trick. This did stop him from stealing the bait. I put a few pieces of marshmellow outside the cage (little pieces) leading up to it. I put two right in the door and one just before the pedal. Then a whole bunch at the end. He did eat the ones all the way up the the pedal an aborted mission. He has to have been around the block a time or two... So dzsmith, is the trap your talking about the one they reach their hand into an pull a lever while trying to get the bait out? if so i have one of these and will try this. I dont mind killing it at all. I just wont it gone. I really wouldnt mind shooting it, just houses an kids are to close, rock throwing distance and i couldnt risk a freak accident over a ****..

I, for one, would appreciate your line of thinking if we lived in such a close proximity. [thumbup]

Like dzsmith, I'd recommend trying the Duke dog proof. It'll get him!

Im a trapper. I used to use live traps, and footholds, and I have caught ***** in them.....but I almost exclusively use the duke dogproof traps....***** are just to curious, they cant help but stick their hand in that hole. not only is it dogproof, the actually engineering of the trap is a very old method of trapping a ****.
+1 for the Duke's DP **** Trap. Caught 10 ***** in two weeks on one trap at my place. Needless to say my place was over invested but it gets pretty much any **** that comes by it.
Where are you located. I've got a **** cuff you can borrow if you're in the Jackson metro area. Pm me.
Hey matador, I ordered one since they come so highly recommended i figure it will be useful in the future. Thanks alot for the offer though...
You could get some of that fly poison and add to coke and nail to a tree if your desperate. Some guys from camp did this and ***** didn't make it off the tree hardly!!!!! Not good if cats or other neighbor friendly animals can get in it though and probably ain't legal.
use the dukes dp trap. I caught 100 ***** in 3 years by my shop.

Just a note. THIS IS NOTE LEGAL. Any pesticide has to be used in accordance with the directions on the lable. This is also highly irresponsible as you will also kill other animals that feed on the carcass of the animal affect or killed by the persticide. This will also include birds of prey, pets and furbearers.
