I got the lye and the lard and a few other "secret" ingredients and made some soap bait yesterday!! Let me tell ya, lye will burn ya
and lard STINKS
. So its gotta catch cats. I added some scent and some red food coolering. It is curing now and I will cut it up Saturday.

I really hope to use it on some lines in the Chunky SOON!!! I will let you guys know the results. {unless it turns out to be an outstanding bait} Then I will just say it dont work!!!

If it burns you, do you really want to be eating a fish with it in its gullet?
When you add the lye crystals to the distilled water, the water temp goes from room temp to 180 degrees in a HURRY. Thats the part that burns. You then have to slowly cool your lye solution. The lye is neutralized in the soponification process.

Lye soap has to cure in a cool, shady place for about a month (sometimes longer) or it'll burn ya pretty bad if handled when wet. It will probably corrode the hooks something fierce, too, if you don't give the lye soap some time to cure.

I had some lines out in the chunky this weekend. Cats did not like the soap, this time. They did not like shrimp either. Bowcatz, sounds like you are using TOO much lye maybe. Mine is 5 days old and there is no "burn".
Hope to get a better handle on trotlining. I think I am "hooked"!!!!
