Good evening guys,
First off my new motor is in and will be installed soon so after 4yrs I'll be back on the water. Can't wait. I was reading the other post about state snapper opening. I love snapper and would love to harvest a few. My boat is a 19' deep vee so I'm comfortable out to the islands and not to far other side if its calm. Question is how close in can we actually catch snapper in Mississippi during the state season. A friend of mine told me last year that they were catching red snapper on a reef between horn and sand island. (They were releasing) I personally never heard of that before. I'm just wondering if I have enough boat to get to the nearest snapper location out of MS during state season.

I also watched a gulf south outdoors episode where they were murdering pompano around a weather station close to ship. Is that an abnormal thing?? I've only fished for reds and specs and flounder. Anything else caught was by accident. I've recently eaten pompano and now I'm gonna be hunting them down!!

Looking forward to hearing your replies.

19' with a good v. You will be fine running out to fh2 or the north end of fh 13. Just watch the weather. I used to run my 17' trihull skiff all over out there.
I know of spots inside the islands that will hold snapper sometimes. It is usually a lot of throw backs but every now and then ya will find keeper. The bigger ones will come in and in there in the fall. We caught a 23lb gag grouper last year inside the islands. And broke several others off

Frank and his captain Eric ( Scoopie) off the Vixen was catching the pompano on spade fish shoals west of the Gulfport channel at the surveyor tower . they show up there in the middle of the summer , you have to use light line and small jigs almost crappie style tipped with shrimp to catch them .The car body's outside of squash channel between ship and horn is your closest spot for snapper and grouper, i have caught them there before but most likely will be throw backs .

There's several shallow water spots that have snapper inside the islands. I've even caught them on the range towers before (normally juveniles). In between sand and horn was probably the base of an old light house that was there which holds various fish depending on the time of the year. I've caught snapper on stuff that was as shallow as 14 feet but again, you see mainly smalls at that depth. Hook a few inside the islands last Sunday for my daughter to reel in (all were released of course).

Capt scoop is a legend I grew up with him. I actually had the honor to learn from one of the best captains on the gulf coast back in the day. Capt skeeter off the amberjack charters owned by the The David family. (rusty ) I think Capt big nose owns the amberjack now if I'm not mistaken.
