Well it looks like I got my blood tracker dog. Meet Copiah my new catahoula. Any advice on training a blood trailing dog?

Thanks
Michael

Nice puppy Michael I hope he works out for you...even though I hope you won't need his services too often. If ya know what I mean.
Scott thanks. I agreed....hope I don't need him but will be nice to have him when I do. I'll post his progress on here. His dad is an accomplished blood dog so if he's anything like him I'll be thrilled. His dad is pretty big dog...just over 100 lbs.

Good luck and try not to get frustrated. Some pups will take right to it and others take a little while to get the hang of it. That is a cool looking pup you have.
Another good book is "Go Find: training your dog to track". It's an old book but it has a lot of good advice and shows exactly how little we know about how a dog tracks. The author was one of the first people to convince the military on how well dogs can track. Some of his experiences are simply amazing at what he got his dogs to do.

Congrats on the puppy and good luck!
Congrats on a great looking pup. Wish I could help you on the tracking part but hoping to get a pup of my own to start messing around with.
Nice looking pup. When you get up to Flora I will be glad to share with you what I know.

Thanks DR for the kind offer. I'll take you up on the offer.

Put him or her on every blood trial possible. Even if you saw the deer go down 50 yards away. Save some deer skin and blood and drag them during the off season. The more you train the better the dog will be.

I have a black mouth cur that found 3 before she was nine months old and a total of about 13 during last season. Tracked some as far as 600 yards. practice makes perfect no doubt about it

Thanks for the advice. He's progressing nicely. Already weights 52 lbs and he's only 4 months old. Can't wait to stick one.

If anyone is in the caseyville area needs a deer trailed or has one down and they don't mind me working my dog...please send me a PM.
Good luck with him. I've been working mine on manmade blood trails for a couple of months now. Have not put him on a real trail yet, the one deer I've shot at I spined, so there was no need to get him out of the kennel.
Keep us posted on him
Tatersalad,
How has your trailing dog done this year?
I haven't seen Tater on here in a while, but I know the dog has found quite a few deer for them this year. He was 3 for 3 week before last I think. Good looking pup too.
Yellow lab

He's turning out to be a good one. In 1 1/2 years he's found 10. Nothing live yet...curious to see how he will handle a live one. He's pushing 90 lbs and is nothing but muscle.
TS,
That's good to hear that your dog is doing great!

I have a 2 yr old lab and she is 8 for 8 this year on trailing deer in her first year.

Both of us are having lots fun with this new hobby of trailing and recovering deer!
