Need some advice?

Its about that time of year again for my family and I to take our vacation to the beautiful Gulf Coast. I have 2 young boys who love to fish and we always sit on a pier and fish. I have a 14 ft john boat and was wondering if it worth my time bringing it down to fish out of and if so are there any laws I must follow or safety equipment I must use that is different than if I was fishing in north Mississippi?

Trapper, bring your boat. There are several bayous such as Cumbest Bayou, Bayou Cassotte, Gravaline Bayou not to mention the large Pascagoula Marsh area that is accessible by way of a smaller 14 ft boat. I have a meeting in 5 minutes, I'll send you a PM soon.
be sure to bring it! Like WM said, plenty of places to put that boat to great use down here. White trout fishing inside Biloxi Bay should get better & better the rest of the summer & into fall. Great way to spend the morning with young ones!
The answer to the last part of your question, is that there are several laws you will need to follow. In the areas mentioned by Wetland man and other areas where a 14ft could operate, will still be under local law enforcement and Coast Gaurd observation. So to be "legal" you would need to make sure the boat is currently registered with the state MSDWFP and that you have your approved Coast Gaurd safety equipment. I won't try and recite that for a boat your size because I may miss something (different size boats require different things). I would advise you look those up on the internet.
Thanks for the info guys. I'm the type of guy who likes to spend my money in Mississippi and love the beach atmosphere so I always go to the Biloxi area for vacation instead of Florida. I lived in Jax, Florida while in the Navy but still love my home state. Another couple of questions, Where do you find length and creel limits for saltwater fish and since my boys love to catch crabs have they fixed the piers around Gulfport yet?
If you want to take the kids to fish off the piers the Palace drive on pier was good last week, caught white trout till we did'nt want any more and my son got a little red( inch or so too short) they were biting best on free lined shrimp and as small a split shot as it took to keep it down, this was out on the end....if you want to catch some sheepshead try the middle of the pier at the first turn around...carolina rigged live or fresh shrimp as close to the structure as you can get it, the trick on them is to keep picking your bait up slightly and moving it a foot or so every couple of minutes, you'll catch most of em when you go to move it.

Then there is the D'iberville marina pier under 110...the water is deep out on the end and holds some nice black drum, fun for kids to catch...i catch most of em here on a half crab. Back close in flounders can be found with a carolina rigged bull minnow and croakers and ground mullet(not to mention hardheads)on shrimp.
Try this site for the rules and regulations. Also, I fish out a 14 alum all the time from Biloxi to Alabama line. You should be good to go!

Trapper, I posted this same thing last summer and Wetland Man along with several other guys on here went way out of their way to point me in the right direction. My boat is a little bigger but I can tell you there are plenty of places for you to fish in a 14' flatboat just use common sense. After our families trip to the Ms Gulfcoast last year I doubt we will ever go anywhere else for coast vacations. My sisters two young sons came in from Boston and we were able to get them on all sorts of different species. My son also caught his first tripletail. I think watching those kids catch ladyfish was the highlight of the trip. They would not have been anymore happy if it would have been a mahi out there doing all those acrobats. Good luck.
Thanks for the all the help everybody. I have about 2 weeks left before we leave and its all I can think about.
Keep reading posts, as it gets closer to your arrival, we might can give you some more detailed reports.
