Welcome to the bull. If I was planning on fishing at night with live shrimp, this is what I would do. Put a small kahle hook 18" to 24" under a popping cork with 15lb to 20lb floro or mono leader. Find some lights shinning in the water from piers or bridges and fish them. Try not to get too close and fish the edges of the light along with in the middle of where the light is shinning. Sometimes I like to cast into the light and let it drift into the shadow.
Ok thanks for the info, and I am glad to have found this forum plenty of useful info for a newbie on here that I have found so far. Can one catch and keep any sharks or would that be something I caught in the shallow water and I forgot to mention I will be fishing from the shore. Thanks again
People do catch a few sharks from some of the piers. The Washington St pier in BSL has lights that shine in the water at night. I have seen some small sharks caught on that pier. Sometimes it is a little too crowded for me there. Another place is the south west corner of the Pass Christian Harbor. There are no lights that shine out in the water, but there are plenty of light in the parking lot so you can see pretty good there at night. A plus for fishing there is you can park right where you fish.
You have already made a wise decision to fish at night, especially with the chaos on the water that 4th of July weekend will bring. Also, fish are pretty active at night in our summertime heat. Find lights, and don't be afraid to go to another light if you aren't getting bit at the first stop. When the fish are feeding under lights, you will know it.
thanks moe, for all the info. I am really looking forward to fishing salt water as I have NEVER done so!!!
kyle you sort of scared me will taking my kids to the beach the day after the fourth be a bad idea?
When you say "leader" I'm thinking you probably mean a wire leader as that is what most non-saltwater fishermen automatically think of when they make a once-a-year trip to the coast. If that is the case then emphatically, no. Never use a wire leader for inshore fishing unless you are specifically targeting sharks.
I have done some reading and knew that there is a fluorocarbon leader as well but you are right when I would think of a leader i would think wire of some sort. What kind of line should I use I am going to respool when I get there and buy an extra spool as well....
Match the weight of your line to your reel and rod - don't try to "overpower" the rod with heavier line. For line type, I'm kind of partial to Berkley Big Game. You can get big spools of it from Walmart for relatively low price and it is about as cut-resistant as any mono you'll find. For a leader, I just use a piece of that same Big Game - normally in 20lb size if I'm using 10-12lb line. No need to use flouro unless you are in REALLY clear water.
Kyle was just referring to trying to fish with all the activity that will be going on because of the crowds. Taking your kids to the beach will be fine.
If your going to be in BSL you have to read this post by fish whisperer, i still go back and read it, some of the best info on that area in this one. Hope yall tear em up...

Washington St. pier in Bay Saint Louis would be an excellant choice for night fishing this time of year. You might consider a pier net because of the distance to the water. Dead shrimp, live shrimp, DOA, Vudoo, plastics should produce under a poping cork. If your in BSL you can find these items at Claborne Hills Grocery on the HWY at the Waveland Exit. They have great food as well. Have fun..

I don't totally agree with this. There are plenty of toothy critters that can bite your "leader" off no matter what you're targeting. I can't tell you how many baits I've lost to the teeth of hungry Spanish Mackerel that I WASN'T targeting specifically. I don't normally use a wire leader unless I keep getting broke off at hook set. just my opinion.
Whisperer, when the spanish are around I switch to a long-shank hook. That gives me the ability to keep using mono for a leader but greatly reduces the cutoffs.

Another good tip... Thanks Bro.
