Looking at two. SW 686+ in 357 or Sig P220 in .45. These would be used for carry and just about everything else. Opinions appreciated.

Get a 1911 in 45 and never look back. love my Springfield.
IMO I would not drop much $$ on a carry gun.. Just because if you used it,, you might not get it back, or for some reason it was taken or stolen. Under $450 is what I looked for.. I found a 90 to 95% good, police trade in with night sights..

I had a sig 40cal and it was very accurate.. One of the best I've seen.. I hated the trigger pull on it,, it was not a P220.. I traded it for a GEN3 Glock 22..

I am a S&W fan. If you're wife will be using this gun also, I'd go with the S&W 686. And you won't have to worry with limp wrist. The M&Ps compacts are hard for the average woman to rack the slide.. It was for mine. But she has no problem with the full size semi auto.

BTW Trijicon Tritium night sights are worth the extra$$$
The sig is a nice pistol. I carry a S&W M&P shield 9mm, it's compact and easy to carry. It's also surprisingly accurate.
I carry a S&W airweight in 38+p
Easy to conceal, point and pull trigger
During a stressful situation, KISS is my friend

Now, I may also carry something else, depending on where I am, but the J frame and a couple speedloaders are always ready
Are you talking about carrying in the woods or carrying in public? For a woods gun, a 686 is fine. For a concealed weapon, it is a little bulky.

80 percent of my carry would be in the woods while at work.
Everybody needs a 4" 357 magnum. Versatile and powerful. Shoots light 38 Specials for target practice all the way up to powerful enough for short range deer hunting.
I carry a diamondback 380. I figure that will get me back to the truck so I can get my hands on my G20. The little diamondback is also amazingly accurate for what it is, far more than any other small 380 I've shot and I'm getting pretty close to 500 rounds fired without a hang up.
Wetland man, I bought myself a stainless Ruger Security Six snubnose just for woods carry. It is very accurate for a snubnose but a tad on the heavy side. I need to find a dedicated carry belt for it rather than hanging it on my pants belt.

The advantage of a revolver is that you can choose to have the first one or two cylinders loaded with snake shot. If you need to shoot solid bullets, you can just thumb the cylinder over.
keltec pf9 for the last 3 yrs. looks rough. sweat and kydex are tough on em.

Look a the Kahr cm9 (i think) it is a dang fine little pistol for a reasonable price. They make it in a .40 too.
I carry a glock subcompact .45. I like it a lot.. It's a little thicker than most want but it's short and packs enough punch.
I know it's small but I carry an Ruger LCP 380 all the time. I got to where I would not carry my bigger pistols due to in convenience. Figured a small 380 in my pocket ALL the time is better than not having it the one time I get lazy!
I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry in .45. The wife has a Glock 19. Son carries a Springfield XD .40 and my daughter is looking at a Ruger SR9C. Get what feels best in your hand. It is all personal preference, we can not choose for you. I will tell you that my wife had a S&W 642 in .38 and that was one hard gun to shoot and be accurate with. The trigger was super heavy and the recoil for her made it uncomfortable to shoot. She hated to shoot it so we sold it a bought the Glock 19.
I've looked and shot. I've decided on a Sig 226 in 40 S&W. In fact, specifically, the P226 Dark Elite. I was shooting quarter sizes groups at 25 yards with one. What a fine pistol! My wife going with a S&W Lady Smith. We are getting our CC Permit together and want to go attend a CC class when one is offered down in our half of the state. Now she'll have a fine little pistol to go with her elegant #1 Ruger! Now, I just need 1500$
let us know what holster you choose for concealment. I have tried concealing a p229, and a 4" and 5" 1911 and nothnig works. That is why i stay with the kel tec. IF i try on a crossbreadd it looks like i have a sheet of plywood under my shirt. I guess they are not made for average size folks.
CC question. In Mississippi, do you have to carry concealed or can you "Open Carry" with your sidearm hanging off of your belt. I live in South Mississippi and the number of days you can wear a "covering layer" like a jacket, or even long sleeved shirt over a sidearm is few. My wife and I are looking into this and just want to do it correctly.
you can open carry in MS.

you will get lots of opinions on why you should or should not. (just not from me, I just answered the question :)

Thanks. BTW, Tombstone, you have the coolest Avitar and screen name on the Bull, hands down!
Personally, I think open carry in public is an invitation to trouble. Nobody can give you grief about carrying if your weapon is fully concealed.

In the woods it's a different matter. There, I switch between open carry and pocket carry (different handgun) depending on what I'm doing.
