Softening older recoil pads

Have a 32 year old tang safety Ruger 77 with the original red rubber recoil pad. Not dry or cracked, just stiffened up quite a bit. Anyone have any suggestions for softening that have worked for you without degrading or discoloring pad?

I can tell you what we do to soften up race kart tire that have hardened. get a quart of diesel fuel. Get one bottle of transmission conditioner. The brand TrannyHoney is what I use. Liberally apply it over and over.

Thanks, Mag Hunter. I assume you mix the two together before applying.
Yes. Once you do it, you will have to let it air out a little to get rid of the smell of diesel.
I would replace it with a Limbsaver Pad & keep the original coated with Armor All for safe keeping.
