Solo Trip 7/11 Trout

Made the boat ramp by 4:30 to try my luck at catching some finger mullet only to loose my net to a underwater obstacle on the second throw! Daylight came and I was where I wanted to be, alone in my boat with no other boats around, it didn't feel like a Fri morning. The first cast with my Topwater produced a solid trout as did my second. I quickly and quietly put the Stick It down and commenced to catch em. At least every third throw was a trout. It was Narvana. Just a little wave action from the north wind and working the bait into the wind. They either wanted it into the wind or side sea, but not a strike fishing with the wind. Cool thing about this morning was that I only lost 1 trout that I hooked up on, and that one broke me off. It was probably my best morning for hook up/catch ratios on Topwater ever. Started out with a white/red head but switched to black/chrome. The sun came up as the 15th keeper hit the box. I caught 26, some undersized or close. I only kept the bigger ones.

I ventured out to try a reef near the ship channel half way to the Pass. A pole marks it. As I'm easing up to the pole I notice something in the water swimming around the pole.....it's a Lemon Fish that had to be 4' long!!! I was only 15 feet from him and pitched my jig to him. With my heart racing out of my chest, he followed it all the way to my boat! His nose was within inches of my trolling motor!!!!! He swam back to the pole and I quickly tied on a 5/0 Game Day Jig and put a hot pink jig on. I fished that spot for 30 minutes hoping to hook him up, but it wasn't meant to be. He gave me a thrill!

Just a great morning on the water. I'm ready to do it again!

Awesome morning. Sounds like you came REAL close to making it that much sweeter.
You should have hooked one of your trout and tossed to the cobia.
The cobia would have been the icing on a already great morning. I threw topwater this morning and didn't get a wiggle.
Awesome report...way to get em Dana

this..... good job!!!
pretty box of fish right there! sure bet it was fun on topwater!
Great Story. But give me the call next time you are going to be solo! I hate to see you out there getting lonely!
Great report WM, wish you had caught the ling..
Yep, sacrificing a trout would have probably been the thing to do. It happened quickly, I just threw him what I had closest with the heaviest line (15).
Awesome trip, WM. That would have been a real treat catching that cobia, especially on David's jig. Do I see a David's Custom Tackle cobia jig in the future?

My thoughts exactly J!

That sounds like one really awesome trip! Don't you love it when the planets align and the fish seem to be pushing each other out of the way to get on your hook? I bet you had a smile going! [biggrin]

Exactly! When you find THE spot they are and slip in on them and catch them at the end of your cast, you can pick them off without them ever knowing you're there! It's awesome!

Cool thing, I'd never caught fish in this spot, bait flipping gave them away!

We all dream of those trips.
Great trip WM. I love fishing with my kids and my buddies but I try to slip off a few times a year on a solo trip. It always seems like it's a lot easier to catch em when your alone when your not stressing over trying to put folks on fish. It's just pure relaxation.
Hate you didn't get your cobia.

Ran into a really nice guy, Joey Guy, who is a friend of John D. He snapped this pic.
