I thought I would document the process I'm using to improve a piece of land for hunting. This will be a multi-year process.

The current condition of the 55 ac parcel is an overstocked pine stand resulting from a wet weather clearcut 20 yrs ago. No site prep. No tree planting. No management activities until now. No hunting has been done on the property due to its poor condition.

The first step was to use digital topo maps and a GPS to lay out access roads.

I have also located the general location for two bow hunting kill plots (1/4 ac). One will be a North wind plot with access from the South, the other a South wind plot with access from the North. Actual plot location will based off good trees for a stand.

Contractor moved in and started cutting on July 3. First thing was to cut out my main roads I had marked. Now that the roads are in, he will cut corridors and I will mark the remaining timber to reduce basal area and improve browse. I started marking select hardwoods that will remain. In a week or so I should be ready to layout the plots.
