We give our dogs trifexis for fleas and heart worms and have never had a single issue with fleas.
Been using Advantage (Bayer) ($15/month) until I found Bayer "Tree & Shrub" (dime/month). Active ingredient for both is imidacloprid. Apply monthly T&S @ .1cc/10# body weight between shoulders.
Works for me for about ten years. Also, good to spray infested yard areas.
Do not spray fruit or veggies.
Cordog, do u use .1 or 1cc per 10#? I use 1cc per 10# starting on shoulders & ending at base of tail. Make sure u get it to the skin instead of the hair. Treat once per month.

I use .1cc/10#. Put it right between the shoulder. Get it down on the skin. I usually do not give more than two or three treatments per year. Usually in the summer. Just keep an eye on them and do not let them get infested. If you have them in a pen, spray pen and house with one oz imidacloprid to one gal of water. Be ready to spray again in about two weeks to knock out the new hatch.
Also, I use Ivomex (Ivermectin) cattle wormer for heart worms. Same rate, .1cc/10# body weight. Oral mixed with a little water or just straight. They do not like the taste. Never lost a dog to heart worms. Been using Ivomex at least 30 plus years.

For my 4 beagles and 2 fiests I use Hartz Ultraguard flea and tick drops from Wal-Mart (other brands will work just as well) spread along the backbone from the tail stump to back of the neck every 60 days during summer, 90 days during winter. Hartz wants you to buy it every 30 days so they place a 30 day "effective" period on the box. I couple that with an Adams flea collar changed every 3-4 months even though Adams says they are good for 6 months. Formerly used the 99 cent Zodiac flea collar from Wal-Mart (very effective--same ingredients as others), but Wally discontinued it because they make more money on the Adams brand and others. That combination has worked well for me for both fleas and ticks. One more thing, cut down the squirrel population around your pens. They are big-time flea carriers. In addition, I use .1 cc/10# body weight of Ivomectin or Noromectin (same thing) every 2 months to combat heart worms. This is a cattle wormer, but effective by many accounts on heart worms. Administer it via a syringe (minus needle) squirted directly into the back of the mouth.

If you don't have Dawn or do not want to use that heavy a degreaser, use Joy dishwashing detergent. Also works well. Kills them dead, deader and deadest! Rinse dogs really well after use so that skin does not react to dried soap.
Our vet sold us Frontline for our dog back in the spring. The past month she's been eat up with fleas for the first time ever. We just switched to the new Nexgard for fleas and ticks. She was flea free the next day. I'm sold on the Nexgard.
Trifexis and Comfortis is what we give ours once a month. Works great!
