Trout question...

Someone posted a thread earlier asking about the trout being slow right now and since i've been bad to hi-jack threads before just decided to create a thread for my silly question.

Now i mostly fish piers because i love blue crabs,i got the best crab cake recipe from my aunt a few years ago and try to keep a few in the freezer. And most of the fish i eat comes from the pearl river where my brother has a camp and keeps us in tabbys, blues and channel cats. All that being said please dont lynch me off the forum yet.

Im not much of a trout fisherman but im reading this forum and soaking up info every day because i really want to start targeting trout when im able to start wadeing again which should be in about a month. So....my question is,with all the short trout being caught right now, most of reported in the 12 to 12.5 range should'nt the trout fishing pick up coniderably by then? And what can i expect for fall fishing?

Sorry for asking silly questions but i really just dont know.I've read enough to get me started in the tackle and technique department thanks to you guys, and i know i dont take a whole lot seriously but reading posts like the ones southern salt, fish whisperer and many of yall post has really got me wanting to catch a trophy trout and add some to my freezer. Plus all the great trout trnys that folks from the bull put on and getting to meet pete has me wanting to start hitting some of these and meet some more of yall great folks.Thanks.....

Hey Donk you're timing is just right. I'll be back from work in about four weeks, by then you will be ready.
Keep at it Bro. You can listen all you want. But you will accelerate your learning curve by doing. It seems as though you are definitely on the right track.
What I love about fishing is the fact that the more I do it, the more I see that I have a lot to learn.

That would be great wild bill....i was going to PM you later and ask about your set up and what all took with you wadeing.
Donk we just need to get the planets aligned just right and I can show you some things I have learned. I think my biggest problem this summer is I broke my lucky sunglasses. I am like I soak up everything on here. Something I did different last year was used very very small hooks fishing with live shrimp and I caught alot more trout.
Fishing Donk, I was going to do a blog post about a wadefishing set...It was going to be a video blog and discuss some specifics of what I use and some tips/tricks.

Very much looking forward to that one...LOL...i never really follow anything to a T but use what others do as place to start and modify from there...[biggrin]

That would be great WVA...and i went the smaller hook route before and as far i go i was getting way too many throat and gill hooks so went back to bigger ones.....one of the biggest things im trying to figure out now is how to fish with live bait whilst wadeing....i can understand fishing with plastics and artificials but sometimes it just seems they dont want nothing live bait.

I learned back when I was a kid on the Atlantic side of Florida, the best way to fish live bait for trout is either with a clear float (strike indicator) but was way more successful with a wine cork float. I fished with an older guy from a local bait shop who made these floats. You just take a wine cork use a razor blade to cut a slice about half thru and just slide your line into the cut. Dont paint the cork leave it brown.

Also the same guy also taught me to use a size 10 treble hook , hook live shrimp just under the horn. Croakers if small enough run your hook thru their ... bunghole bringing the point back towards the tail, this causes the croaker to grunt ay more frequently.

That being said I havent caught a "big" trout on my trips to the Gulf but on the atlantic coast I have quite a few fish in the 5-6 lb range. Hope this helps a little.
