Takes me back to the good ol says of when I first started shotguns barking dogs cb radios and basket racks. Man those were good times and a lot of fun back then. Wish I could get in on a few of those hunts every year
Ok let the bashing begin but if you have time check out some of those videos posted bet you'll smile like I did.

I watched a bunch of those old dog hunting videos a while back. It is interesting for sure.
Yea I grew up hunting just across the state line from hurly ms in a big club run by my uncle. 5000 acres and we dog hunted in morning still hunt the afternoons. Man we had some fun on those morning hunts. Back when it seemed hunting was a lot more fun. I haven't dog hunted in 15years or more. Watching those videos put a big ol smile on my face and I remembered the good ol days again
There is only 2 clubs left in my area that run dogs, myself and Millbrook, and this is their last year. The way things are these days, I look for dog hunting to be outlawed within the next 5 years. I'm a bow hunting fanatic, but I've also been a dog man since I was a kid....**** dogs, deer dogs, rabbit dogs, squirrel dogs, bird dogs. I have 20 head ready to run come November! I look forward to opening day of dog season just as much as October 1st!

You are right in my neck of the woods! I grew up with dogs too, and love being afield with them. Have not been on a deer hunt with dogs since I was a kid. Still go rabbit and squirrel with dogs some, but even that is getting more difficult. Alot of the rabbit and squirrel men are getting out because everyone is so afraid it will mess up "Their" deer. Dog men are the victims of the commercialization of hunting and a few bad apples ruining it for all. What a shame!

you want get any bashing from me as I have done the same thing many times..... I killed my 1st deer on a dog drive in 1971.... for me personally deer hunting was more fun back then compared to now.... in our camp we had one big bunk room that was partitioned off from rest of camp house... it was COLD in there and if you wanted to get any sleep you'd better get in bed before Taylor came in and started snoring.... Toby came in at 5 to wake us up for breakfast and you got your clothes on quick and went and warmed up at the fireplace then got in line for breakfast....outside, the dog men were loading dogs and the dogs would be cutting up because they knew what was coming....after breakfast, standers loaded up in the back of 4x4 trucks and held on tight....everybody got on stand then you'd hear the dog men and drivers turn loose....when the dogs jumped the 1st deer and started running the hairs on the back of my neck would stand straight out....yeah, I fondly remember the good ol' days of deer hunting.....

Trust me, I know all to well about "messing the deer hunting up", more from **** hunting than the deer dogs. But it's a waste of time to mention how many deer I've killed bow hunting in the very same woods I **** hunted just the night before! But hey, I'm gonna cut-em-loose until Mississippi tells me I can't!

Good memories right there bud! I'm the hunt master at my camp and put the dog drives together. I love waking up to our cook preparing breakfast, drink coffee and put together my drive. And like you, when them dogs jump the first deer and go to runnin', I still get chill bumps all over listenin' to that sweet music!

Why are they getting out if they have permission to be there?
This thread had me watching some of those vids also. I grew up dog hunting and still do. I enjoy the fire out of it. My kids love it. Hate to see what is happening to the sport of hunting in general. People are WAY too serious about a dang woods goat now days. They make it sound like a job not a hobby.
Those were the days, I grew up dog hunting too, I can still hear the sound of dogs cold trailing and a strike, the anticipation of is it going to turn my way and what is it. One thing for sure, it was fast, more like wing shooting than what we call deer huntin today, we had blueticks, walkers, beagles, but my best memories were at my cousins south of Vicksburg, they had a pack of Bassett Hounds, it was entertaining to say the least. I wish we could go back, you still had disagreements back then but people were more neighborly and hunting was a shared effort and everyone was happy whenever someone got one.
Why are they getting out if they have permission to be there?
They are losing access to so many properties that it just is not worth it. None of the men I used to rabbit hunt with have dogs any more because they just did not have enough places to hunt with them.
I'm afraid the " dog days" of the south are all but behind us .
They've made it so inconvenient to the dog hunters in my area that it's not worth feeding them all year for the few days they can cut em loose , and having a GPS collar on all your hounds , permits etc that the state requires .
Some of my best hunting memeries are from running dogs off horses ,, those days are long gone

No bashing here, I am a old dog man. Like everyone ells that have posted on this thread. Lots of good memories from those days, from the breakfast in the morning to the chase and a deer down.
I still hunt the old crossing and kill deer every year.
The CB's sending info of where they was headed... Everyone gathering back up to go again I loved everything about.
Timber company put us on program and the dog days ended. There is only a couple left in my area. When they do get close it brings back memories and I get ready.

Lets keep this thread for the old dog guys and the few that are still dropping the tailgate.

If you are anti dog just don't post.
Lets respect each other.
Just wanted to get that out because I know how these threads end up..[biggrin]

Dangit Limb! [sneaky]
My grandad used to raise walkers and that's how I started Huntin. I still love to hear a good race and get mighty fired up when I hear em in the distance. Of course nowadays it's still huntin on our place but as a still hunter I will 100% agree that a few bad apples do give a bad name to the dog hunter.
The camaraderie that comes with dog hunting is second to none. Although we dont have a so called "camp", it is just family and close friends on family property. You just cant beat the atmosphere, the anticipation, the excitement, and the intensity of dog hunting. There is just no sweeter sound than a pack of hounds as soon as they jump. Those hounds were born to hunt and you will never see them as happy, or yourself, as when they are on a hot trail.

It is sad the way it is going though; my great uncle who is almost 80 years old has been dog hunting the majority of his life, and it hurts to hear him say that the day they ban dog hunting, he will be hanging it up. This is the man that is responsible for my whole family hunting, and to know that soon all of those days spent with him and the rest of the family dog hunting, will all soon be memories we can no longer make.

But as long as it is still allowed, you can bet we will be dropping a tailgate just about every morning of dog season.

Killed my first buck in front of dogs on a creek, I'll never forget it. I used to dog hunt with my grandpa every break I had in school, lots of fun
I was a you buck back then but still remember them dog drives the cb names and all. We dog hunted one side of airport road one week then swap the next week to the other side. Dog hunt mornings then still hunt afternoons. Killed my first dog deer at 10steps with a 30in barrel Winchester model 120 with a turkey choke in it lol. Ran right to me a big ass doe that was aged by biologist at 13.5 years old.
